Perhaps the most captivating fortified church in Transylvania. Within its medieval walls echo centuries of stories waiting to be heard. A place for explorers seeking the true soul of Transylvania – imperfect, yet incomparably authentic.

Fortified Church Iacobeni

The Keep

The Keep

The mighty keep in the middle of the fortified church, also used as a bell tower, dominates the complex. Built in the late 15th century from hewn sandstone, it impresses with its 26-meter height and walls nearly 3 meters thick at the base. Originally accessible only by ladder, it offered refuge for up to 300 villagers in times of war. Its embrasures for archers testify to well-thought-out defense and invite reflection on medieval strategies.

Zwinger & Gate Tower

Zwinger & Gate Tower

The outer Zwinger served as the final defensive extension, offering villagers additional protection in times of war. It also provided space to shield more livestock from attackers. The impressive guardian of this forecourt is the imposing Gate Tower from the early 16th century. With its distinctive half-timbered construction and portcullis, it stands as a prime example of medieval defensive architecture.

The Inner Courtyard

The Inner Courtyard

The inner defensive ring, the heart of the fortifications, built around 1500, was a bulwark for people and livestock in case of defence. Four strategically placed towers, two of which still stand prominently today, once formed a connected system. Discover the clever defensive details, like the double embrasures.

The Crypt

The Crypt

Beneath the nave, between the main space and the choir, lies a crypt accessible via a staircase. Here, two burial chambers from 1771 were rediscovered during renovations in 2005. Pastor Daniel Schullerus rests in one – his remains visibly linking his story to the site. A mystical place, unique in Transylvania, that raises questions: What other secrets does this church still hold?
